“If you had the power to choose anyone you wanted to become on this Earth, choose to be the best version of you that you could ever hope to be.”
~ J. Mishaelle
My journey as a writer began at four years old in a Houston, Texas Wal-Mart. My parents told me to pick whatever three items I’d wanted from the entire store. Instead of candy and toys, I came to the check-out counter struggling, my little arms tightly clutching a ream of paper, a notebook, and a pack of pencils. Of everything I could have chosen, I chose to write. It was then my destiny was forged. Through the years that followed, writing became my everything. With eleven years of experience in investigative journalism and holding an MA in Fiction as well as an MFA in Speculative Fiction Writing, my work serves as both an escape and a return – a way to make sense of injustice while crafting the futures I hope we all can see.
I am a speculative fiction writer whose storytelling orbits the radiant edges of science fiction and fantasy, crafting worlds that test the boundaries of imagination and reality. I channel mythologies from overlooked cultures and imagine futures where the voiceless rise. My work pulses with wonder and resistance, exploring the sacred in the strange and the power in the unseen, detouring from the road less traveled in search of roads not yet walked. Through my stories, I aim to showcase our shared humanity through many lenses, diving deep into empowerment, justice, and advocacy, blending multi-cultural magic with imaginative science. I hope to inspire others to feel heard, seen, and appreciated, no matter how far they may feel from the ‘norm.’
My goal is to share different perspectives with my readers, broadening their understanding of humanity’s beautiful multiplicity by amplifying marginalized points-of-view and stifled voices. I want to showcase the richness of the world’s many cultures, the uniqueness of its peoples, and offer a window through which people can understand one another more. Driven by passion and compassion in equal measure, I write to open doors, illuminate shadows, and remind people that every culture holds galaxies of stories waiting to shine. When I’m not dreaming up deeply psychological villains or parallel worlds shaped by ancestral echoes, I sketch my thoughts into vivid drawings and travel the world, meeting new people and experiencing life through their eyes.
I am J. Mishaelle.
